Chadakhai is the day after the celebration of the Kartik Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik.Chadakhai is celebrated to end the month-long abstinence from non-vegetarian food for every Odia families.This special day Chadkhai has a historic significance for the state of Western Odisha, where it is celebrated to commemorate its rich heritage. chadakhai comes after kartika masa(month of kartika).we odia people believe that it is a sin to eat non-veg in month of kartika. and the day after kartika purnami which is the last day of kartika month odia people celebrate chadakhai. In chadakhai everybody eats non-veg again.basically Chadakhai means again start eating non-veg. When the Odias make trip to the local fish/meat market. They do it to break the logjam of their month long absence from non-vegetarian food they cherish. This hiatus can be an entire month for the few devoted ones or 5 days (PANCHUKA) of absence at the fag end for the most.
